Commonwealth Games 2026: Victoria cancels event after costs blow out to 7bn
Birmingham could become the Commonwealth City, say Conservatives
Victoria has canceled the 2026 Commonwealth Games after costs blew out to 7 billion dollars. The decision was made after the state government failed to reach an agreement with the federal government over funding. Conservatives have said that Birmingham could become the Commonwealth City, as it staged the 2022 Commonwealth Games. However, it is uncertain who will host the Games now.
On 30 July 2019, an official from the Birmingham 2022 said that shooting was not included in Birmingham's bid and would not be part of the Games. This decision was met with criticism from some quarters, who argued that shooting is a major Commonwealth sport. However, the Birmingham 2022 organizing committee defended the decision, saying that it was made in order to keep the Games within budget.
With Victoria now withdrawing from being the next host, it is unclear what will happen next. Every other Australian state has ruled out hosting the Games, so it is possible that they will be held in another country. The Commonwealth Games Federation has said that it will work with the Australian government to find a new host city.
