Early Life and Career
Diosdado Macapagal was born on September 28, 1910, in Lubao, Pampanga. After graduating from the University of the Philippines with a law degree, he entered politics and served in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1957.
Presidency
Macapagal was elected President of the Philippines in 1961. During his term, he initiated a number of important reforms, including:
- The Land Reform Act, which distributed land to farmers
- The creation of the Social Security System
- The establishment of the Philippine National Bank
Macapagal also promoted education and culture, and he is credited with establishing the National Library of the Philippines.
Legacy
Macapagal's presidency was marked by both significant achievements and challenges. Despite facing economic difficulties and political opposition, he left a lasting legacy as a visionary leader who worked to improve the lives of Filipinos.
